9. Words for things that people wear

Clothes (pl.) – stands for the things that people wear (дрехи, облекло)

Clothing (rather formal) – means clothes, especially a particular type of clothes: warm clothing (облекло)

There is no singular form of clothes or clothing: a piece/ an item/ an article of clothing is used to talk about one thing that people wear such as a dress or shirt.

Garment (formal) – a piece of clothing (дреха, одежда) – He was wearing a strange shapeless garment.

Garment should only be used in formal or literary contexts. In everyday contexts use a piece of clothing

Dress – means clothes, especially when worn in a particular style or for a particular occasion: We were allowed to wear casual dress on Friday

Wear (usually in compounds) – means clothes for a particular purpose or occasion, especially when it is being sold in shops/stores: the children’s wear department

Rent – is used to talk about paying to live in or use a building that is owned by someone else (наем, рента, наемам): We rented an apartment together.

In AmE, you also rent a car or electrical equipment.

Hire - In BrE, you can use rent or hire, but it is more usual to say that you hire a car: You can hire a car at the airport.

Lease – is used to talk about renting buildings, cars, or equipment over a long period of time, especially for business use.
