Съюзите в
английски език (English conjunctions) — произнася се [kən'dʒʌη(k)∫(ə)ns] или съкратено
«cj» са служебни думи, служещи за свързване на думи и фрази в простите
изречения и прости изречения в сложното изречение.
II. ВИДОВЕ СЪЮЗИ
1. По
своите лексикални фунции в изречението, съюзите се подразделят на:
Съчинителни
съюзи (Coordinating Conjunctions)
те свързват
думи, фрази и части от изречението, които не зависят едни от други. Например:
Her hair was
dark and long. — Косите й бяха тъмни и дълги.
It's fine but
cold. — Добре, но е студено.
Tea or coffee?
— Чай или кафе?
Такива съюзи
са:
Подчинителни
съюзи (Subordinating Conjunction / dependent word / subordinator)
Tе свързват
допълнителното изречение с главното и уточняват подчинителния характер помежду
им. Например:
When she read
the letter, she locked it in her desk. — Когато прочете писмото, тя го заключи
в бюрото си.
He knew that I
should go with him if he asked me to. — Той знаеше, че аз ще тръгна с него, ако
ме покани.

2. По своята
форма съюзите се делят на:
1. Прости съюзи (неразложими на съставни части)
- and — и,
- if — ако,
- that — че,
- but — но,
- after — след,
- as — като,
- while — докато и др.;
- Производни и сложни съюзи:
- unless — освен ако, ако не,
- because — защото,
- however — обаче, тъй като,
2. Съставни съюзи (Compound conjunctions)
(съставени от
няколко отделни думи - словосъчетания):
- as well as — така както,
- in case — в случай че,
- as soon as,
- as if
- in order that
- in order to
- on condition that
- even if
- so that
- provided that
- as though
- in as much as и др.
3. Съотносителни съюзи (Correlative / paired conjunctions):
- both … and — както … така,
- either... or — или … или,
- not [only] ... but [also] — не само … но и, и др.
- neither…nor — нито ... нито,
- whether... or — дали ... или,
- just as . . . so — точно като ... така и,
- from…to… — от ... до,
- as many as — толкова ... колкото,
- between…and… — между ... и,
- scarcely…when… — едва ... когато,
- so…that… — така ... както,
- hardly…when… — тъкмо ... когато,
- as…so… — както ... така,
- as…as… — толкова ... колкото,
- such…that… — тъй като ... така че,
- not only…but also… — не само ... но също и,
Примери:
- Both Mary and George have gone to Buffalo.
- Either Ivan or George must have done this mischief.
- Neither Ivan nor George has passed the test.
- For seeking admission in a US-university, you should sit for both GRE and TOEFL.
- I do not know whether my friend is arriving by the 10 o’clock flight or 11 o’clock flight.
- He not only wrote the screenplay for the movie but also acted a role in it.
- I see only such movies as have good songs.
- Such was the weather the whole of today that I decided to stay indoors.
- If I am as intelligent as my father.
- As you sow, so you reap.
- I had hardly sat down for dinner, when the phone rang
- I left home early so that I would not miss the 8 o’clock train to Sofia.
- Ivanov had scarcely reached the platform when the train started moving.
- The meeting will take place between 7 p.m and 8 p.m.
- There are as many chairs as there are students.
- Application will be issued by the college from 11 am to 3 pm.
